The Bolbones Indians were the first known settlers in what is now known as Walnut Creek. The Spanish settlers came in 1772 and started the community "the Corners" when two brothers built the first home in the area. Walnut Creek was the 8th city established in Contra Costa County. From its birth to now, Walnut Creek experienced rapid growth in population and retail businesses. In 1990 legendary entertainer Bob Hope opened the Regional Center for the Arts with singers Vic Damone and Diahann Carroll and emcee Joel Grey.
The many open space parks including Shell Ridge Open Space, Acalanes Ridge Open Space, Lime Ridge Open Space, Borges Ranch and Sugarloaf Open Space Ranch offer scenic views of the rolling hills and wondrous Mt Diablo. Hiking trails, gardens, picnic areas, and camping and abound in the area. The average temperatures in 50s January and the 70s in July make Walnut Creek a paradise to enjoy all the hillsides have to offer.
Walnut Creek is proud of the educational system and offers a variety of options to help resident children gain an excellent education. Walnut Creek is home to 13 private schools of various faiths and educational theories as well as three public elementary schools, one public middle school, and two public high schools.
